Supporting Confidence, Connection and Water Safety
Uniting Circle CEO and Founder Mujgan Tahery spoke with SBS about a 10-week swimming program supporting newly arrived and refugee Afghan women in Western Sydney.
The program was designed to provide women with an opportunity to learn swimming and water safety in a culturally supportive environment, while building confidence and creating opportunities for connection.
Creating Safe Opportunities for Women
For many newly arrived women, accessing swimming and water-based activities can be difficult because of cultural, social and practical barriers.
The program created a welcoming environment where participants could learn new skills, become more comfortable in the water and build confidence alongside other women from their community.
Mujgan shared the importance of creating culturally responsive opportunities that allow women to participate comfortably while developing skills that can support their independence and wellbeing.
Building Confidence Through Community
The program was about more than learning to swim. It provided an opportunity for women to connect with others, build confidence and take part in an activity in a supportive environment.
Uniting Circle is proud to continue creating programs that respond to the needs of culturally diverse and newly arrived communities.
